Smoke Grenade

Turn a corridor into a wall of nothing, and let them feel their way in the dark.

Smoke Grenade

The Smoke Grenade is a throwable utility gadget in Rainbow Six Siege that, once deployed, fills a defined volume of the map with a dense cloud of particulate smoke. The cloud blocks line of sight for every operator, camera, and drone within its radius, effectively erasing the area from all visual information channels for both attackers and defenders.

It occupies a central role in the game's tactical layer: creating temporary safe corridors for repositioning, denying a defender's sightline over a critical chokepoint, masking a breach, or simply forcing an opponent to guess where you are. Because the effect is mutual—your own team is equally blinded while inside the cloud—timing and positioning around the smoke are as important as the throw itself.

Gadget Type
Utility / Area Denial
Primary Carrier
Smoke (GIGN, France)
Effect
Blocks all visual line-of-sight (operators, cameras, drones) within the cloud volume
Teams Affected
Both attackers and defenders
Deployment
Throwable; activates after a short fuse delay
Interaction with Destructibles
Smoke cloud persists regardless of nearby wall destruction; does not block bullet penetration

Lore & Background

In the operational doctrine of the Rainbow coalition, smoke grenades are among the most universally issued pieces of tactical equipment. Every operator—from a GIGN interventionist to a SAS counter-terrorist—has handled them in training. They are inexpensive, reliable, and require no special calibration. What separates an elite operator from a recruit is not the gadget itself but the instinct for when and where to set it off.

The GIGN operator known simply as Smoke has built his entire combat identity around the grenade. Where others see a single tool in a kit, he sees a canvas: three charges that can be layered, sequenced, or detonated in staggered bursts to sculpt a shifting fog bank across a room. His teammates learn to read the edges of his cloud the way a sailor reads the wake of a boat—knowing exactly where the solid ground ends and the unknown begins.

On the Rainbow Six Siege battlefield, the smoke grenade has become a language of its own. A single cloud over a window tells an enemy, 'I am not where you expect.' Two clouds flanking a hallway say, 'There is no safe path.' A cloud dropped over a breached wall is a whispered promise: 'I am already inside, and you cannot see me.'

In Their Own Story

The safe-room door was three seconds from sealing. Three seconds. Rook could hear the hydraulic whine, the last breath of air being pressed out of the corridor. He didn't have time to sprint. He didn't have time to think.

He palmed the second grenade, felt the cold steel of the ring, and flicked it in a lazy arc over the half-broken wall. The pin sang. A soft hiss, then the tell-tale *pfft* of the canister cracking open. White swallowed the hallway in a rolling wave, thick as milk, heavy as wool. The drone's little red eye blinked once, twice, and then its feed turned to static.

Rook stepped into the fog. The world went white. He could feel the texture of the concrete under his boots, the grit of dust on his lips. Somewhere ahead, a defender's breathing changed—sharper, faster, the rhythm of someone who had just lost their eyes. Rook smiled behind his mask. In the smoke, nobody is watching. In the smoke, the only thing that matters is the sound of your own heartbeat and the direction you choose to walk.

Reader's Guide

Smoke Grenade – carried by Smoke (GIGN). Function: throws a canister that, after a brief fuse, erupts into a dense cloud blocking all visual line-of-sight for operators, cameras, and drones within its volume for a limited duration.

The tactical problem it solves is information denial and area control. A defender holding a sightline over a hallway or window can be rendered completely blind, forcing them to guess or reposition. Attackers use it to mask repositioning, protect a flank during a breach, or create a safe window to plant or defuse. Because the effect is mutual, your own team is equally blinded while inside the cloud, so throws must be timed so allies are already on the far side or on the periphery.

Key interactions: the cloud blocks camera feeds and drone vision within its radius, making it a direct counter to those gadgets. It does not block bullets or interact with destructible surfaces—smoke fills the volume regardless of nearby walls. Layering multiple grenades extends the effective blind zone. A well-placed cloud over a breached wall can deny a defender's view of the breach point for the cloud's full duration, buying critical seconds for a follow-up push.
