The unit was built for precision: small teams, high-stakes extractions, counter-terrorism in confined urban environments. Grid was among the operators trusted with the most delicate jobs—those where a single misstep meant civilian casualties and a failed mission. He developed a reputation not for raw firepower but for spatial awareness, for reading a room the way an engineer reads a circuit diagram.

When the international terrorist network that would later become the primary antagonist of the Siege universe began targeting European infrastructure, the GEI was called in to support a multi-nation response. Grid's expertise in electronic warfare and counter-surveillance made him a natural candidate for the Rainbow Six framework. He brought with him a philosophy that the most dangerous weapon in a building is not a rifle but a hidden sensor, a buried trap, a drone hovering just above the ceiling tile.

His Hardwire device reflects that philosophy in hardware form: a compact unit that, when triggered, emits a localized electromagnetic pulse sufficient to knock out any electronic gadget within its radius. In the field, Grid treats it as both a shield and a statement—a reminder to the other side that their cleverness has a counter, and that counter is already on the wall.

The corridor smelled of dust and old concrete. Grid crouched behind the reinforced doorframe, his thumb resting on the small activation stud of the Hardwire he'd pressed into the plaster an hour ago. Through the wall, muffled, he could hear the soft whir of a drone's rotors and the faint click of a trap being set on the far side of the room. Two gadgets. Maybe three. He counted the seconds the way he always did—four, five, six—then pressed the stud.

A low hum rolled through the wall. On the other side, the drone's light flickered and died. The trap's indicator went dark. Silence. Grid exhaled, checked his breathing, and moved to the next position. The building was quiet now, and that quiet was his.
