Scanner

Three seconds of total awareness, and every hidden wall is laid bare.

Scanner

The Scanner is a compact electronic-warfare device carried by select Defender operators in Rainbow Six Siege. When activated, it emits a short-range pulse that momentarily reveals the positions of all hostile operators within its radius while simultaneously highlighting every destructible surface—walls, floors, and ceilings—in the surrounding area. It is the single most important information-gathering tool on the Defender side of the map, turning the fog of war into a tactical advantage for a few critical seconds.

Because it is limited in charges and duration, the Scanner demands precise timing. A well-placed scan can expose a stacked breach, reveal a flanker behind a corner, or confirm that a reinforced wall is about to be shot through. Missed or poorly timed, it reveals nothing and wastes a charge that may be needed later in the round.

Lore & Background

The Scanner is a product of the same electronic-warfare research programs that underpin much of modern counter-terrorist equipment. In the R6S universe, operators from elite units around the world—France's GIGN, Germany's GSG 9—rely on it as a force multiplier in close-quarters environments where line of sight is scarce and every second of uncertainty costs lives.

For Mute, the device is an extension of his lifelong obsession with signal disruption and detection. His Scanner is calibrated to pick up the faint electromagnetic signatures of enemy gear and comms, painting a ghostly overlay of hostile positions onto his HUD. For Jäger, it is a tool of methodical patience: he scans, waits, and lets the data tell him exactly where the next breach will come so he can pre-position his turrets.

In the broader narrative of Siege, the Scanner represents the Defender's philosophical edge over the Attacker. Attackers bring momentum and surprise; Defenders bring knowledge and preparation. The Scanner is the physical embodiment of that preparation—a small box that says, in effect, 'I know where you are, and I know where you will try to go next.'

In Their Own Story

The corridor smelled of cordite and wet concrete. Mute crouched behind the overturned table, his breathing slow, the Scanner warm in his palm. Three charges. He'd saved two for later. This was the first.

He pressed the trigger. A soft chime filled his earpiece, and the world flickered—suddenly annotated. Two red diamonds pulsed behind the east wall. One, higher up, on the ceiling. A third, further down the hall, already cycling a breaching charge.

'East wall, two seconds,' he murmured into his comms. 'Ceiling, north corner. And someone's about to open the south door.'

The charge detonated. The wall crumbled into dust and rebar. Mute was already moving, the remaining two charges heavy in his pocket, his eyes fixed on the gap where two silhouettes would appear in a heartbeat.

He smiled. The Scanner had bought him the one thing no amount of armor could: time.

Reader's Guide

The Scanner is carried by Mute (GIGN) and Jäger (GSG 9), both Defenders. Activating it reveals the positions of all enemy operators within a set radius for a brief duration and simultaneously highlights every destructible surface (walls, floors, ceilings) in that area.

It solves the core Defender problem of information asymmetry: you cannot defend against a breach you cannot see coming. The Scanner converts hidden enemy positions and potential breach points into visible, actionable data for a few seconds, letting you reposition, pre-aim, or call out threats to your team.

Key mechanical interactions: The highlighted surfaces are the same ones that can be destroyed by breaching rounds, thermal charges, or shotguns—so a scan effectively tells you where the next breach will land. It does not destroy or reinforce surfaces; it only reveals them. It also does not reveal enemies who are behind reinforced (non-destructible) walls, only those within the pulse radius regardless of cover. Because charges are finite, scanning too early in the round can leave you blind during the critical mid-round rotations. Coordinate with teammates: a scan that exposes a stacked flank is worth more than one that confirms an empty hallway.
