"Copy, GIG command. SAS element is on station. Requesting forty-five seconds to paint the kill zone." He said it the way you'd order a coffee. Flat. Unhurried. The kind of calm that made the French operators in the back of the bird nod without a word.

Echo tapped her tablet, and the drone's feed bloomed across her visor. She counted doors, counted angles, counted the seconds. Forty-three. Forty-four. She looked up at Brimstone and gave a single, slow nod.

He keyed the tablet. "Time."

The sky above the compound turned briefly, impossibly orange, and the world below rearranged itself around the new geometry of the breach. Echo's drone slipped through the gap in the fence like a silver fish, and Warden—already on the ground, shield-drone raised like a wall of polished steel—met the first burst of return fire with a sound like a car door slamming shut.

They were inside before the dust settled. They were out before the neighbours' dogs finished barking. And by the time the extraction bird came back around, the three of them were already arguing, in that flat Australian monotone, about who'd had the last of the tinned peaches in the galley.
