A low, steady hum answered. Then the sound of a heavy panel sliding into place, sealing the stairwell like a steel door in a submarine. He could picture her there, back against the wall, shield raised, waiting for the first attacker to walk into the wall of polymer and steel she'd just put between them and the objective.

Tachanka grinned behind his goggles. "Good. Let them come."

Above, a boot scuffed tile. Then another. The first attacker would reach the shield in four seconds. Tachanka adjusted his grip, exhaled, and let the silence do the rest.
