In Their Own Story

The site was a coastal research facility, half-submerged in fog. Brimstone crouched behind a concrete barrier two hundred meters out, binoculars pressed to his eyes, counting the rotation of the defenders on the upper catwalk. Three. Maybe four. One of them had a shield.

He keyed his comm. "Cluster, grid four-seven, two seconds. Move on the flash."

The sky split with a low whine. Six thermite charges arced down in a tight cluster, slamming into the reinforced wall with a thunderclap that shook dust from the ceiling tiles. The wall bloomed orange, then black, then crumbled inward in a sheet of molten slag.

The team poured through. Brimstone didn't follow. He was already pulling a smoke canister from his pack, lobbing it into the corridor behind them to seal the retreat. Then he tapped his earpiece, watching through his optics as a teammate went down in the far room, bleeding, stumbling.

"Stim. Now. Don't make me say it twice."

The small beacon hit the floor, pulsing blue. The operator grabbed it, hauled himself upright, and kept moving. Brimstone exhaled, shouldered his rifle, and finally followed his team into the smoke.
